| Before I post the following posts dealing with Riley's past, I am asking you not to reply to this at all. I want this to be just Riley's past... just so the users know, not the characters. So, unless there is a thread where Riley reveals these things to your character, do not have them know. The only exception to that is the murder of Rutherford as the Daily Prophet would've covered it because the Houston family name is very well-known and they are a very rich and influential family. Thanks! ...and I'll post the years when I figure them out! :D | |

| What Just Happened? -- 25 December 1996
A young Riley watched his older brother, Christian Daemyn Houston, playing with his new toys. Riley had wanted the toys Christian had gotten. He slowly walked up to his brother and asked, "Can I play with them, too?" Christian looked up. He looked like an older version of Riley himself. "Sure, Riley. Here, let's play with these first. They'll be more fun! Mum and Dad said I can run around the house with these! Isn't that weird?" Riley nodded and the two brothers started to play. Riley only got along with Christian. He wasn't sure if he got along well with his cousin Samantha because Uncle Charlie (his godfather) was no longer allowed near the rest of the Houstons. He had done something bad. Riley severely missed him, but as long as he had Christian, he'd be okay. Even at that young age, Riley was more mature than any other four-year-old out there. He thought it was because he had an older brother and because his parents really hated him. His mother was always yelling at him, but not Christian. His father would praise Christian for doing anything and everything, but when Riley did the same stuff but better, he was never praised. He was always told to do better. He was in Christian's shadow, but he didn't blame his brother. He loved his brother dearly. The two of them started running around the upstairs, smiling and laughing. No matter what happened, they always loved each other. They were unseperable, even though they were brothers and not best friends. But on that Christmas, something terrible happened. As they were running around the slick, hard-wood floors near the stairs, Riley did what he always did when running around with Christian -- he attempted to trip him. Normally Christian would just stumble, but he never fell. But the two of them were too close to the stairs. Christian stumbled, but he leaned back to keep from falling on his face. But he leaned back too far. Riley turned in time to see his brother fall backwards down the stairs. Each time his five-year-old brother hit a new stairs, a terrible crack was heard. Riley ran to the top of the stairs and stared in horror at his brother's limp body on the landing. What had he done? He heard his mother and father's footsteps coming from the kitchen where they were helping the Houstons make a Christmas dinner before the Harkers came. Riley couldn't move. He wanted to rush to his brother's side and say, "Chris, knock it off. Stop playing around. This isn't funny." But somehow Riley knew it wasn't a joke. Christian would never stay still for that long. What had happened to his brother? His Mum screamed in horror and agony when her eyes fell upon Christian's crumpled body. Then her eyes followed the stairs up to where Riley stood. Her eyes were hard and cold. Riley knew that he'd never be loved again. He had accidently killed his brother. He could see it in his mother's eyes and saw it written on her face. His father's face was hard as stone and expressionless. Rutherford never cried or showed intense emotion in front of anyone, not even Riley's mum. Riley backed away from the stairs and slumped against the wall. He started sobbing. He had hurt his brother so bad that he was dead! His parents now officially hated him! He was doomed! He stayed in that slumped position until Jonathon Harker carried him to his bedroom once the Harker family got there. None of them had the feast that was prepared for them. They were all mourning the loss of Christian Daemyn Houston -- who died because of him.

| The Murder of Rutherford Houston -- 20 June 2007
Riley was reading one of his textbooks in his bedroom during the summer break before his fifth year at Hogwarts. He heard his father come home from wherever he had been that late night. Riley had his suspicions, but never voiced them for he knew what would happen to him if he did. He sighed heavily as he heard his mother start yelling at his father, accusing him of working with the Dark Lord. When he heard Dark Lord, Riley got quite interested in the argument. It was not over the normal things—no, this was definitely different than the rest.
Riley got out of his bed and went to the door and opened it slightly so he could see his parents’ silhouettes. He saw his father, but not his mother. That didn’t bother him any. He started listening more intently.
“You were working for him! How dare you put this family in danger! How dare you ruin our family name!” his mother screamed at his father.
His father just laughed. “You’re barely part of this family, Wilhelmina,” his father hissed vehemently. “And why would I care about you and him? The only thing that matters to me is the Dark Lord. You can do nothing about that, Wilhelmina.”
“I can do many things, Rutherford,” his mother whispered back, barely loud enough for Riley to hear.
Riley pushed his door open so he could see the resentment on his mother’s face. He was frightened at what his mother would do.
It happened in slow motion after that. His mother smiled wickedly and whispered, “Avada Kedavra!”
Riley saw his father start falling to the ground. He knew that his mother was harsh and vile, but he had never thought that she’d sink that low. But he was worried about his father. He rushed out of his bedroom, wand in hand. He pointed it at his mother. He was breathing heavily out of anger that was surging from him. “How dare you!”
His mother laughed vindictively. She didn’t care whatsoever that she had just murdered someone—her husband—and that she’d go to Azkaban.
“Don’t move,” Riley spat when his mother started to come closer. “Don’t come any closer or I will—”
Then the sound of people Apparating filled the air around them. Aurors surrounded Riley and his mother. They took both their wands and did a test, making the wand reveal the last curse/spell used. They looked at Wilhelmina Houston and then at Rutherford. They knew. They handed Riley back his wand. They took his mother away and Riley couldn’t care less. She had murdered his father; she was a criminal and got what she deserved.
Only one Auror stayed behind with Riley. “Son, do you have any other relatives?”
Riley looked up at the man and nodded. “My grandparents on either side and an aunt and an uncle who are married,” he reeled off.
The Auror held up his hand. “We’ll figure this out for you. We’ll make sure one of them takes you in.”
Riley wasn’t paying attention. He couldn’t take his eyes away from his father’s lifeless body on the floor.

| Refiguring Riley's Life -- 24 June 2007 Riley, after having his life refigured out, unpacked his bags from a Ministry car that an Auror was driving. Once his luggage was out of the trunk, the Auror drove off, not caring if he could even get into the house.
Unsure of if his grandparents were even home, Riley knocked. He didn’t even want to be moving in with his foul grandparents (who were his father’s parents) after his mother was sentenced to a life-long term in Azkaban. He heard his grandmother, Cornelia, grumble from the other side of the oak door.
“You’re here. Wonderful. Get in,” she said piercingly.
Riley, without the help from his grandmother, got all of his things into the foyer of the manor. His grandmother stalked off and left him there to fend for himself. He knew that she was still mourning the death of Rutherford, her only child (only because she had disowned her other son), but he thought for a moment that she’d actually like having him there. But Riley was wrong; he was just a nuisance to his grandparents.
He found his room, the smallest bedroom in the house, and started unpacking. He feared that they would try brainwashing him to follow their ways: Hating Muggle-born children. He hated when they had ever called them Mudbloods, but now he would hear it often now that he was living with them. He sat on the bed and put his head in his hands. He was no where near where his only friend lived (who was Ashley). He would only see Ashley (who wasn't exactly a great friend, but a friend nonetheless) during his time at Hogwarts, and that wouldn’t be enough to escape this Hell. He knew exactly what he would have to deal with—the same things he had to deal with his entire life. He had hoped that he would’ve been allowed to go to his distant cousin’s home where they were actually loving and caring people. But no, he had to go to his grandparents.

| The First and Last Visit -- 7 July 2007 Riley waited at the gates of Azkaban prison; hating the feeling he had this close to Dementors. He was visiting his mother, which he didn’t really want to do, but he was dragged along by his mother’s father, John Harker. Riley followed his grandfather quietly and sulkily. He definitely didn’t want to see Wilhelmina. Even though Riley had hated his father most of the time, the death really shook Riley up. He didn’t want to see the murderer. He never called Wilhelmina mother again.
John Harker led the way through the prison and only where the Dementors would allow them to go. Riley followed silently. When they reached where they were allowed to visit with Wilhelmina, he saw how the Dementors were affecting her. She deserved every bit of what she got. She looked quite haggard and dirty. Her hair was in tangles and her clothes were ragged. Her eyes were sunken, along with her cheek bones. Wilhelmina looked horrible; Riley couldn’t help but smirk at what she had gotten herself into.
When she saw Riley, she glared. “What is he doing here?” she asked in a raspy voice.
“He’s your son. You should be able to see him at least once after you killed his father,” John said bitterly.
Riley was hated by both sides of the family. He had supposedly ruined his parents’ lives. He was an accident and they had never wanted a baby, hence all the abuse. It was their anger for him actually living all those years, even after being a premature baby. They had hoped that he would’ve died for being so small, but he had lived. He was a fighter, something they hated.
Riley tuned out any conversation Wilhelmina and John had. But when his mother wanted to talk to him, he was leery. But he approached her nonetheless.
“It’s your fault that he’s dead. You’re the one that pushed him, and me, over the edge. You indirectly killed your father,” she whispered into Riley’s ear.
Riley clenched his jaw and turned. He left John and Wilhelmina and waited outside the prison for them to finish visiting. He fought back tears of anger. He had not indirectly killed his father. He hadn’t pushed them over the edge. He didn’t do anything except live. A tear fell from his eye. Maybe it was his fault. Riley wiped the tear away, trying to ignore the guilty feeling in his stomach. He wasn’t the one who had yelled Avada Kadavra, it had been Wilhelmina.
John finally reappeared and took Riley back to Gunther and Cornelia. Riley had gone right back into his room and shut the door quietly, trying not to bring on any pain at the moment other than the mental pain he was going through at the moment. He laid on his bed and cried, unable to hold it back. He wasn’t the one to blame for his father’s death. He soon fell asleep and saw the murder happen over and over again.
He woke up. But he could never really wake up from the nightmare that was his life.

| The Scar -- 30 June 2008 Riley, after living with his grandparents for two years, was once again writing Ashley at the desk in his bedroom. It was near dinnertime and Riley heard his grandfather scuffling toward Riley’s room. He sighed. He knew what was coming, but he was glad that it was his grandfather coming to yell rather than his grandmother. So far his grandfather hadn’t laid a hand on him ... yet.
“Riley?” his grandfather called before he even got to the opening.
Riley sighed again. He put his quill down and turned in the swivel chair to face the doorway. He was not going to make it easy for his grandfather, whom he hated with a passion. He saw Gunther’s shadow and then his grandfather appeared in the doorway.
“When I call for you, I want you to answer next time,” he said irritably. “You made me walk back here to see if you were even still here.”
Riley shrugged. He hardly ever talked to either of his grandparents or the rest of his family; he detested them all. He stood up. “Do you need me to make dinner?” he asked quietly.
“No, your grandmother did that, even though you were supposed to,” he spat.
Riley shrugged again. He didn’t really care. He knew what was going to happen. He was ready. Though he was not of age yet, he had his wand ready if he needed it. He wasn’t planning on using it, hoping that his anger and fear would make him lose control (something that the Ministry let slip every now and then) so he wouldn’t necessarily get into trouble for Underage Magic.
His grandfather was fuming. “You better start doing as you’re told, young man,” he said warningly.
Riley tensed up, ready for anything. His jaw was set and he said not one word to his grandfather. Then he heard Cornelia (his grandmother) coming. Riley gulped unnoticeably and prepared himself for the beating. He never knew if his grandmother would curse him or hit him with her hands; she was unpredictable and he hated it.
“Gunther, are you finished with him yet?” she called out in her shrill voice.
“Yes, dear,” his grandfather replied.
She stood next to his grandfather. “He’s not on the floor ... I see no new bruises; you didn’t even punish him. Tut, tut, tut,” she muttered. “Well, I guess it’s up to me. You—” she said to Riley “—need to learn a lesson ... you always do as you’re told.” She raised her wand and muttered a curse that Riley couldn’t hear.
He pulled out his wand and said, “Protego!” What ever curse she used, ricocheted and hit the wall, nearly destroying it. Riley was breathing heavily. This was the first time he had ever used magic to defend himself against her. He forced himself to calm down, knowing that more was coming his way.
Both of his grandparents were fuming. His grandfather shot a curse in Riley’s direction. Once again, Riley used the Shield Charm, deflecting it. This time, Riley tried getting out of his bedroom, but his grandparents kept him from leaving. Had Riley known how to Apparate, he would’ve, but he hadn’t come of age quite yet. They threw him backwards and into his desk, the corner jabbing him in his ribs.
Riley stood and pointed his wand at them, breathing heavily again at the struggle. They both shot curses at him, and he was only able to deflect one of them. The other hit his wand hand and he sucked in his breath as blood started pouring from his arm. He dropped his wand out of pain and with his left hand, pressed against the wound the best he could. His grandfather grabbed his wand and the two of them left the room, locking the door behind him. And Riley knew that he wouldn’t be able to get out until they were ready to let him out.
He found a shirt and wrapped his arm in it. But the blood quickly drenched it. He needed to get to St. Mungo’s, but knew that he wouldn’t be able to. He leaned against his desk. The letter! He rewrapped his arm in a different shirt and wrote to Ashley, hoping that his owl would get it to her quickly so her parents could bail him out and take him to St. Mungo’s.
But then he remembered that Ashley never home when he needed her the most -- she had a life, you know. He sat down, getting lightheaded, and continued putting pressure on his wound. But he couldn’t stay conscious long enough to stop the bleeding as much as it should’ve been.
When he awoke, he saw food by his door and the bleeding had stopped. His door was also ajar. Maybe they finally felt guilty ... probably not. But Riley stood shakily and sat next to the food and started eating, hoping that it would make him feel better. And that was the day he stopped talking to his family altogether

| First Magical Encounter -- 1 September 1997 A five year old Riley was sitting in his room sorting the cards he had gotten from Chocolate Frogs. He heard his parents yelling in the other room. Again. He hated it when they yelled, but there was nothing he could do about it. But he thought he could help them a little bit. So he stood up and went out to the living room where his parents were. His father held his wand and had it pointed at his mother, who had hers pointing back at him. This was the first time Riley had seen them threaten to use their wands on each other. He took a deep breath. “Stop it,” he said shakily, fearing what they would do to him for interfering. But he was sick of the yelling and arguments the two had every day. His parents quieted and looked down at him. His father’s face was contorted with rage. His mother looked as though she truly loved him and that she feared for him. But he knew this was a lie. As much as they yelled at each other, they both yelled at him just the same. But they had never laid a hand (or used magic) on him. Until now. Just saying the word Stop made his father blow. His father raised his wand and pointed it at Riley. “How many times do I have to tell you to stay out of it?!” he demanded. Riley didn’t answer. But his mother did. “Leave Riley out of this,” she hissed. That was the first and last time his mother had ever defended him. Riley was shocked, amazed, and grateful. But it only angered his father worse. “I will NOT have you be telling me what to do!” his father yelled. He pointed his wand at Riley’s mother and shot a curse at her, which she shielded herself from. She looked at Riley. “Run,” she said quickly. Before Riley could do anything, his father shot a curse at him. Not knowing what to do, Riley stood there, frozen with fear. Then he felt something happen. Something he couldn’t explain. Something that had never happened before. His first encounter with magic. He defended himself from the curse as much as a five-year-old could. The curse still hit him, but whatever he did, saved his life. The curse hit him square in the chest and cut him open, but it would’ve killed him if Riley hadn’t tried with all his might to use the Shield Charm that he had seen his mother do so many times before. His father just stared at him, shocked and angered. Riley was falling to the floor, bleeding profusely. His mother, who was actually acting like a mother, yelled, “ Stupefy,” at his father and then rushed to Riley’s side. She did not, however, take him to St. Mungo’s. Instead she started healing the wounds. But there would always be the mark of his father’s rage on Riley’s chest. And that mark would remind him of how much magic could harm and help. | |

| The Sorting -- 1 September 2003 Riley entered the Great Hall and looked at the bewitched ceiling. He then looked around at the other students of Hogwarts, all of which were watching the first years get ready to be sorted. He was getting nervous. There were nervous smiles being smiled amongst the first years that were standing around waiting for their names to be called. Then the Sorting began. He hardly paid attention to the names of his fellow classmates. He would not talk to them much anyways for he is a shy child. And then his name was called. At first he could not move. What if they made a mistake? But it was not a mistake, they had called his name. He made his way to the stool on which he was to sit. The Sorting Hat was placed on his head. He heard a small voice in his ear, Ah ... a Houston. Your father was a Slytherin -- as were all other Houstons, but your mother was a Ravenclaw. But where to put you? Hmm ... I know the perfect place. Then the hat shouted for all to hear: GRYFFINDOR!!!Riley was relieved that he was not put into Slytherin where every other Houston was Sorted into. He went to the table that was cheering loudly and sat down next to another first year Gryffindor. | |
