| Please write a paper on a famous wizard or witch in famous novels. For example Merlin the Enchanter or Morgan Le Fay. Attach your paper in here so I can grade it. I'll grade it by October 5th. You will have to include your grade, house and name in the assignment. If they haven't been posted in this thread by 30th of September you will have points deducted from your grade. | |

| The Wizard of Oz, or the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was a major character in the novel of the same name. It was written by L. Frank Baum, and was originally published in 1900. It has been rewritten and republished under many different names, and even has a movie based on it. The Wizard of Oz himself, is not even a wizard, but a petty magician. The Wizard uses complex machines and optical illusions to trick the citizens of Emerald City into believing he can do real magic. A reason for this might be that the Wizard is actually a squib. He is jealous of the wizarding community, so he goes off to a foreign country, and engages in hoaxing the public. The main character of the story, Dorothy, needs to see this "Wizard" so that she can make it back home. Dorothy ends up in the world of Oz because a tornado picks up her house in Kansas, and deposits it in the Land of Oz. Dorothy's house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East, killing her. This is an interesting event, because any Witch should be able to apparate away if a house is about to fall on her. After ruthlessly murdering a witch, the muggle Dorothy is praised by a community of dwarf-like muggles who were being oppressed by the Wicked Witch of the East. These muggles go on to steal the Witch's shoes off of her corpse and to give them to Dorothy. Another witch, called the Good Witch of the North, explains to Dorothy the path that she must take. This road is paved with yellow bricks, and leads to a place called Emerald City. It is in this place that the Wonderful Wizard of Oz resides. Dorothy begins her journey towards the city. Along the way, she meets three companions; a scarecrow, a tin man, and a lion. All of these three creatures have a problem: the scarecrow doesn't have a brain, the tin man doesn't have a heart, and the lion is a coward. Apparently, all three believe that the Wizard, who is really a squib, can fix them. Dorothy's problem is that she cannot get home. The path to the city is long and hard, but the four finally reach it. The Wizard grants them all an audience, but only allows them to enter one at a time. He appears to each of the four in a different way. To Dorothy, the Wizard is a giant head; the scarecrow sees a beautiful woman; the tin man sees a ravenous beast; the lion sees a ball of fire. All four of these are just illusions. The manipulative Wizard agrees to help them all, but says that they have to kill the Wicked Witch of the West first. The Wizard is a perfect example of a manipulative, jealous squib. Later in the story, he even admits to being a fake. Even though he did help the four main characters out in the end, he only did it after his own ends had been achieved.
